- Cardboard slicing: This is where rankings start to separate. Cardboard is abrasive, fibrous, and honest. It reveals how efficiently a blade cuts and how quickly the apex degrades.
- Rope or dense utility material: When appropriate, I add sisal, synthetic rope, or thick packing material. This shows how the edge behaves under resistance and whether it keeps biting after repeated stress.
My rule: a blade does not earn a top rating just because it shaves hair. It needs to cut cleanly, predictably, and with low effort across multiple materials.
How I Score the Edge
I rank blade sharpness in four categories: initial bite, cutting smoothness, control, and retention. Initial bite is how quickly the edge grabs the material. Why Edge Retention Changes the Ranking
This is the part many quick reviews skip. I always retest after use. After cardboard, rope, or food prep, I go back to paper and check whether the blade still slices cleanly in the same sections. If performance collapses, that tells me the initial edge was either too fragile, poorly deburred, or unsupported by the blade steel and geometry.
Retention matters because it changes the real-world value of sharpness. A knife that starts at a perfect ten and drops to a six after one session is less useful to me than a knife that starts at an eight and stays there. Ranking only the first impression rewards flashy edges. Ranking the edge after work rewards better knives.
The Mistakes I Avoid
